Meet the Donkeys

  • Charlie and George came to MMFS in August of 2022 from our friends at Rising Star Horse Rescue in CT. These two special donkeys came from the BLM where they once lived in the wild. They were rounded up and placed with owners who threw them out to pasture for a year, and then they proceeded to send them to an auction/slaughter. They were rescued and made their way to Rising Star to start a new life – a new life of domestication after being taken from the wild and then kind of dumped again. Our barn is quiet and we have the time to help them learn that humans will not hurt them. Charlie is about nine years old and George is around three. They lack trust in humans, but each day gets a little easier.

In Memoriam

  • We lost Spanky in Oct of 2024. He was a mini-donkey who was rescued in November 2023. Their caregiver raised Spanky, Stella, and Angel from birth. They were once part of a large breeding herd of mini-donkeys. Sadly, their caregiver was unable to take care of them due to health issues. He was 26 years old, but had not received proper care or nutrition for some time and sadly they are in pretty bad shape. He likely passed of cancer.

  • We lost Angel in Oct of 2024. Angel is a mini-donkey who was rescued in November 2023. Their caregiver raised Spanky, Angel, and Stella from birth. They were once part of a large breeding herd of mini-donkeys. Sadly, their caregiver was unable to take care of them due to health issues. She was 26 years old, but had not received proper care or nutrition for some time. Angel has some unique traits from birth - she had no tail and was missing an eye. She is overweight and has Cushing’s disease. She was sweet and shy. We lost Angel as she had a choke incident and was getting more and more difficult for her to eat.

  • We lost Stella in April of 2024. She was rescued with her mini-donkey “siblings” Spank & Angel. She was the matriarch of the crew and her loss was deeply felt. Donkeys become incredibly bonded, especially after living together for 25 years. Her body, mouth, and feet were unable to recover from years of neglect. We tried very hard to help her overcome these. We love you, Stella.
